What Are Endodontic Procedures?

The purpose of endodontic procedures is to treat the dental pulp, the soft tissue inside of each tooth. Dental pulp consists of tissue, blood vessels, and nerves that are integral in the development of the tooth. The dental pulp can become infected, which can cause pain and deterioration of the tooth. Endodontic procedures treat and prevent infection of the dental pulp with the goal of saving the natural tooth so that it can remain in place in your mouth.

Benefits of Endodontic Procedures

Getting the right endodontic procedure at the right time has many benefits:

  • Save teeth. Endodontic procedures can often save one or more teeth that would otherwise have to be extracted. Preserving your natural teeth is the ultimate goal of endodontic procedures.
  • Relieve pain. An infected tooth can be extremely painful. Endodontic procedures, like root canal therapy, remove the infected tissue and the nerves inside the tooth to relieve pain.
  • Save money. Saving your natural teeth can save you money by allowing you to avoid further treatment and costly replacement teeth.
  • Prevent dental problems. Endodontic procedures can be done proactively for teeth that are at risk of infection or damage. It can prevent a painful infection or other dental problems that could lead to the loss of one or more teeth.

Procedures Offered

We provide the following endodontic procedures:

Root Canal Therapy. When a tooth is infected or at risk of infection, root canal therapy can often save the tooth. The procedure involves removing the dental pulp and replacing it with a filler material that preserves the tooth and prevents infection. Root canal therapy can be done proactively to prevent infection or retroactively to treat a tooth infection.

Endodontic Retreatment.  After a root canal procedure has been performed on a tooth, a tooth may still become reinfected if the root canal was not complete. This calls for endodontic retreatment, which is essentially a repeat root canal. We use an endodontic microscope to ensure that we remove all of the dental pulp and completely fill every space within the root canal to prevent the need for retreatment.

Apicoectomy. When underdeveloped or damaged root tissue allows bacteria to enter the root canal it can result in an infection. An apicoectomy removes the tip of the tooth root, cleans out the infected tissue, and places a cap on the end of the root to seal it off from further infection.

Cracked Teeth. A crack in a tooth can allow bacteria to invade the dental pulp and cause an infection. A cracked tooth should be filled or covered with a crown to prevent infection. In some cases root canal therapy will be performed before the crown is placed.

Traumatic Injuries. An injury to the mouth can knock a tooth loose or out of place. It can also cause internal problems with a tooth that are unable to be seen right away. Prompt treatment after an injury improves the chances of saving the tooth.

Frequently Asked Questions About Endodontics

Is a root canal painful?
Don’t believe the myths you hear about root canals. With the help of anesthesia you won’t feel any pain during a root canal procedure. We provide a range of sedation options to help you feel comfortable and relaxed.
Will I need a crown after a root canal?
It is not always necessary to receive a crown after a root canal, but it is recommended. The entry point to access the dental pulp leaves a hole that can be filled, but in most cases root canal therapy is necessary due to existing damage to the crown of the tooth. A severely decayed or cracked tooth will most likely need a crown.
Can a knocked out tooth be saved?
In many cases a tooth that has been knocked out can be saved. The key is acting fast. A knocked out tooth can only remain out of the mouth for about 30 minutes or less before it may be too late to save it. If you can, put it back in the socket and bite down on some clean gauze or cloth. If not, place the tooth in a cup of saliva or milk and bring it with you when you come to us for treatment.
How does a tooth survive after a root canal?
Although the dental pulp is important while the tooth is developing, once the tooth is fully developed it is no longer needed. The pulp can be completely removed, along with the blood vessels and nerves, and the tooth can still remain fully functional in the mouth.
